F-Paul Gibson The Gibson Company pioneered new designs in acoustic mandolins, and also built one of the earliest and most successful mass-produced electric mandolins: EM Introduced in , this hollowbody, 8-string instrument at first featured the same “Charlie Christian” pickup used on some of Gibson’s archtop guitars, with a notch cut in the pickguard to accommodate the pickup. See the top photo for an example. EM s built between and have a rectangular screw-pole pickup; post instruments have a “soapbar” pickup similar to the P used on the Les Paul guitar. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe these pickups are not identical to P s in that they have only four poles as opposed to six. Gibson discontinued the EM in The instrument’s simple design—a standard A-style mandolin with a few extra holes for pickup, jack, and volume and tone knobs—is probably still the most common configuration for electric mandolins, and has been copied ad nauseam by low-end manufacturers of every stripe. EM EM Zoom in on this puppy and you’ll see its distinctive pickup: This is an EM ; they were introduced in , renamed EM in , and discontinued after

These were the days of a spiritual awakening throughout North America, commonly called The Jesus Movement. Perhaps that was the impetus behind the creation of the guitar and this guitar was designed to be a deep sounding vocal backup instrument. It does have an excellent, big sound.

All models made during WW2. The post-war logo has the “G” and the “N” with a tail that drops below the other letters. Dot on “i” connected to “G”: Dot on “i” free from “G”: Gibson always used nitrocellulose lacquer for all instruments from to present. Some other special order custom colors were available. Prior to , Gibson used mostly spirit varnish. This is very similar to Behlen’s Violin Varnish still available today. This spirit varnish produces a eggshell crazing patina.

Around is when Gibson started experimenting with Nitrocellulose laquer, and by all models were using lacquer. In the lacquer experimentation process began on less expensive models like the opaque white top A3, L3, and Sheraton Brown “A” models. Note that all staining was done with water based aniline dyes directly on the wood. As for binding, all bindings were scraped clean of varnish and stain at the end of the finishing process.

Early on, this left the binding “raw”.

It might be because it was a sentimental gift, maybe it was sold to pay the bills, or maybe you just didn’t realize how much you loved that guitar until it was gone. These are the stories of the ones that got away. Most of them are my own stories, but send me your stories as well and they just might get published here. I’ve always felt like I did something wrong and wish I could fix it.

A – If you’re a buyer, the value is the max price you are ready to pay to have it. If you’re a seller, the value is the minimum amount you accept to sell it.. You can check ebay for completed sales for the same model, but value on ebay is not value in a shop or elsewhere, for reasons. Outside of a completed transaction, value has no meaning, so please do not ask me to value your guitar. Please re-read above and you’ll have the answer.

Harmony instruments were produced on an industrial scale. Even the less common models can’t be considered “rare”. Remember that all Harmony made guitars this means all guitars on this website are still considered low grade instruments by most players and collectors, and can’t be compared in value to the “great” names as Gibson, Fender, Martin As a result, only a handful of guys in the world are ready to pay real money for a rare Harmony model. In the Harmony world, the interested buyer is often rarer than the guitar itself.

Q – How can I date my Harmony guitar from the serial number? A – Usually you will find two stamps inside your Harmony guitar. They always are on a place easy to read, ie near the f-holes on a archtop. The larger one is the serial number, and the part after the “H” letter is the model number.

See More Back Dating back to , Taylor acoustic guitars have been making headlines in guitar magazines for more than 40 years. But they didn’t always go by the name ‘Taylor’ – if you’re a veteran of the ’70s music scene, you might remember their introduction as the Westland Music Company. No matter what they’ve been called over the years, some things haven’t changed: In this lineup of Taylor acoustic guitars, you’ll see that they continue to live up to their excellent reputation.

The simple secret to Taylor’s success is that they’ve always had a clear focus on the artist. They’re ready to take on any style of music, so no matter how you like to play, you can find an instrument in this section that’s the right fit for you. For instance, are you looking for something compact enough for travel or for a young musician to handle? If you’re searching for a big instrument with an even bigger sound, this is it.

Career[ edit ] — Robyn was rediscovered by Swedish pop singer Meja in the early s. Meja and her band Legacy of Sound visited Robyn’s school and were involved with a musical workshop. Robyn’s performances impressed Meja so much so that she contacted her management and a meeting was arranged with Robyn and her parents.

The body is made of highly flamed maple, absolutely gorgeous. And most of all, there is a detail we have never encountered on a Country Club: The sound post connects top and back, giving the guitar a greater rigidity, to avoid feedback problems when played really loud. No heavy dings, no heavy wear. The binding deterioration, so common on ’60 Gretsches, was becoming a real problem on the guitar’s body, since it just could not be stopped in any way.

So, instead of keeping on touching it up by replacing the damaged pieces one at a time, we have chosen to ask our luthier Salvatore Mancuso to complety restore it. The restoration job is just perfect, since Mancuso has used exactly the same material, dimentions and colour of the original binding. More rare details make of this guitar a true “collector’s item”: Rare and interesting indeed!

All in all, an exceptional guitar, rare and beautiful, with the same sound and circuitry of period’s s, but with an unique look and personality, with a great natural blond finish and a fantastic flamed maple body.

To state the obvious – acoustic guitar strings are strings that go on an acoustic guitar. However, acoustic guitar strings use copper based alloys 1 while electric guitar strings use nickel and steel. Copper is a better metal for preserving the tone of an acoustic instrument while nickel works better with electric guitar pickups. You may get a bit more output if you use nickel based strings in conjunction with a soundhole pickup like the L. Dozens of manufacturers make acoustic guitar strings, from giant brands down to small boutique shops.

An alloy is a mixture of metals or a mixture of a metal and another element from Wikipedia.

The first Gibson I ever bought was a ES (the first guitar I ever owned was an Antares acoustic. In , I begged my mom for it after coming home the night before from a rock concert). At the time, I understood the ES was vintage, but had no idea that it was just a regular Gibson student model.

All numbers were impressed into the wood and a six digit number assigned, though no particular order was given and some instruments had a letter prefix. The orange labels inside hollow bodied instruments was discontinued in and were replaced by white and orange rectangle labels on the acoustics, and small black, purple and white rectangle labels were placed on electric models. A few bolt on neck instruments had a date ink stamped on the heel area.

In , Gibson first introduced the serialization method that is in practice today. This updated system utilizes an impressed eight digit numbering scheme that covers both serializing and dating functions. The pattern is as follows: The numbers show Kalamazoo production, show Nashville production. The Kalamazoo numbers were discontinued in Bozeman instruments began using designations and, in , Nashville instruments began using designations.

It should also be noted that the Nashville plant has not reached the s since , so these numbers have been reserved for prototypes.

The condition of this high end instrument is excellent plus and this guitar is simply wonderful. Only the highest grade woods used as you can see This guitar shows very little fret wear. There are just a few minor nicks or scratches which is normal wear for a guitar of this vintage that has been lovingly played.

Fender is known for a lot of things, Electric guitars, basses, amplifiers, electric pianos, but, when have you ever heard of professionals playing Fender acoustic guitars? If you want to buy a quality acoustic guitar you might want to look at a Martin, a Gibson or even a Guild.

Or that the guitar had the neck replaced at some point. I doubt it’s fake. There are many knock-offs, using Gibson-style designs, but those companies tend to clearly identify their company on the headstock and certainly don’t “fake” Gibson. And on the rare occasion someone does make a “counterfeit” Gibson, it’s surely a high-end model, and has an equally as fake serial number.

Is it an archtop? Anything before , Gibson didn’t stamp the serial number on the back of the headstock, but rather on a sticker inside the guitar. If it’s there, use a flashlight to look in the upper F-hole. The problem with the stickers is that they sometimes, well, unstick. If there is no sticker, either take it into a luthier who’s well-versed in classic Gibsons, or take pics of it and post on the Gibson forum and the Guild forum might be helpful – not Gibson, but lots of archtop aficionados there.

Someone can probably give you an approximate date, and surmise how “original” it is by looking at it. Regardless, they’re generally valuable guitars, particularly the ES series.
