As our mothers and grandmothers often remind us, the kitchen is where the heart of the home is. It not simply a place for the preparation of meals; it is a place where a family can converse and grow closer. So our fitted kitchens deserve a certain level of attention and care. Here are some steps to planning your perfect culinary place:

1.The needs and the wants need to be clearly separated. You may want a large table in the center, but if it compromises on the necessities, such as an oven, then you have to reconsider your design. List all the things you have to have in the kitchen – storage space (how much?), appliances and so on. Then, in another column, list all the things that you would like to see in the space – a counter, a large kitchen table, decorations. This will help lay grounding for the basic idea.

2.You need to add your personal touch – your spice, your personality – to the kitchen designs. This kitchen is a place you’re going to be eating daily in, so it should be comfortable to be in and attractive for you and your family. Don’t plan your kitchen to clash different styles – you really don’t want to see an old oak table in a sleek modern kitchen, it doesn’t go well according to conventional aesthetics. Then again, if this works for you, by all means do it. It’s all down to personal preference.

3.No matter how your kitchen looks, it needs to be functional and practical. There is no way you can effectively have a large dinner table in a small kitchen, for example. You need to lay out plans such that there is enough space for someone to cook and move around, otherwise your kitchen will just become an ornament – a pretty room to show visitors, but amounting to very little in terms of its usefulness.

4.Stoves, dishwashers and sinks all have one thing in common – they take up space. Plan enough room for your appliances and utilities since they form the basis of your kitchen and you will not be able to survive without them.

5.At the end of the day, it will come down to cost. You may need to cut back on certain luxuries to allow for the bare bones that you need at the moment. Don’t let it bother you – it is possible to design a kitchen space to accommodate additional stylistic changes, so keep at the back of your mind.

Fitted kitchens are a cinch if you apply the necessary logic and thought. Plan well, and all should go well. But jump in, and you could end up regretting a remodel – an expensive and tiring mistake.
